Best Movies of 2008 by Sarah Pinsker
1. MILK
Outstanding performances. Made me want to rouse some rabble.
2. HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY
The troll market had everything I loved about Pan's Labyrinth without the parts that gave me nightmares. The best comic book movie of the year, hitting all of the notes that the comic hits, most particularly, the tragedy of a monster fighting monsters.
3. WALL-E
I still like the Incredibles better, but I dug the way Wall-E skewered our lazy future. It would make a great double-feature with Idiocracy.
4. DOUBT
More outstanding performances. It might have even more resonance if I had ever set foot in a Catholic church or school. It provoked some great conversations coming out of the theater.
5. FROST/NIXON
Intense and fascinating. Yet more great performances, yet more great conversations.
6. SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE
A fairy tale. Enjoyable but thinner than the above... good soundtrack, visually striking, and a good mix of humor and drama...
7. FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL
I've loved Jason Segel since Freaks & Geeks, and Russell Brand is hilarious. My sister keeps calling my house to ask if I've seen her shoe.
8. IRON MAN
I love me a good superhero movie, and this one was pretty decent.
9. THE DARK KNIGHT
Dark and creepy. I'm not sure I ever want to watch it again. Very true to the Killing Joke/Dark Knight Returns visions of Batman.
10. BE KIND REWIND
Sweet and funny. (Alternate #10: Baby Mama. Also sweet and funny, and also making excellent use of Sigourney Weaver.)
