by John Bachman
I live in a small corner of hip hop, with more love for locals and friends than mainstream mc’s. This a small collection of some of my favorites of the year, with links so you can check them out.
The Man From Somewhere Else & AOI – “One Friend” with GDP and Shape
Napalm Def played our first show ever with GDP and TMFSE, and they remain 2 of my favorite mc’s. They are finally back on a track together, and brought old friend Shape with them.
Kanye – “Bound2”
I was out of town when Yeezus was leaked, but got it as soon as I got home. I still skip through half of it, but was relieved when I got to "Bound2". I still love it, despite the absurd video.
Dwell – “the Big Picture”
An old friend and retired mc, Dwell has been trickling material out over the last few years. This is a great example of why he needs to come out of retirement.
Stillborn Identity – “Bridges and Singes”
Maybe this one shouldn’t count since I produced it, but I still love the beat (especially when it flips) and am happy to see how Cody has grown as a mc.
Armand Hammer – “Patra”
Been a big Billy Woods fan since Super Chron Flight Bros and the Reavers, and this album came out of nowhere. A nice change of pace, and this is one of my favs.
Run the Jewels – “Get It”
This was a staple last summer. A great album, tag team and the beat bangs in your car.
Action Bronson - “the Rockers” with Wiz Khalifa
This was a hard pick. Love AB, and wasn’t blown away by this ep, but this one grew on me. Blue Chips 2 has some bangers on it too!
OG Dutch Master – “In Disguise”
OG Dutch Master has been a slow burn for me. Saw him on a few shows this summer, over mostly trap beats. But this sounds like something I might produce, the rhymes are intelligent and the song is short. I love it.
Taylo – “Eat it, Beat it, Skeet it”
I was really excited when this album dropped, and eager to hear what Taylo is gonna do next. Love how the vocal sample is cut up at the beginning, and is a great soundtrack to Friday night.
Ray Strife – “He-Man Mona Lisa” with Roebus One, Wade Wilson and Cornelius III
I finally met Ray a few weeks ago, and got to hear this song live. One of my favs on his new album (that I put out on tape.) Great versus by Roebus, Wade and CIII, over a Lurch Lightning beat that samples He-Man.
Galactic Brethren (Brother Seamus and Moemaw Naedon) – “Brighter Day”
A concept album, so it’s hard to pick a standout, but this seems like a better sequel to Deltron3030 than what Del actually put out. Futuristic sounding, but still rooted in hip hop, and not electronic. Moemaw Naedon has such a calm voice, and is telling a story.
Honorable mention (came out in November 2012): Captain Murphy - "Mighy Morphin Foreskin"
“Mighty Morphin Foreskin" was late to the game on this mixtape – not a huge FlyLo fan, but this bangs and changes so much to keep your interest.
